Time Flyers:
Sheffield to the Somme
Part of the popular BBC2 series which studies archeology with the help of helicopters. This programme concentrated on the site of Redmires Camp on the Moors just outside Sheffield where men of 12th (Sheffield City) Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment were trained in 1914/15. By using a helicopter it is still possible to see the outlines of many original trenches dug by the Battalion during their long months of training. The programme later flew over Serre on the Somme battlefield where the Battalion suffered such heavy casualties on 1st July 1916 - the opening day of the Battle of the Somme.
Interviewee:
Taff was interviewed on the programme and described the formation and training of the men of 'Kitchener's Army', such as 12th York and Lancs. He then showed the presenter how a typical soldier would be dressed and equipped.
Uniforms and Equipment:
Khaki Devil supplied a man dressed exactly as a soldier of 12th York and Lancs would have been during the time at Redmires and later on the Somme. The detail was exact down to the correct shoulder titles and 1914 Pattern equipment worn by men of Kitchener's New Armies.
