Not About Heroes

Premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1982 (where it won a Fringe First award), Stephen MacDonald's drama is about the friendship between the poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, who met as fellow patients at Craiglockhart Hospital, Edinburgh, in 1917. Narrated by Sassoon, the story unfolds in a series of flashbacks, most of which take place at the hospital. It has been adapted for TV and radio, and remains a very popular stage production.

As Owen and Sassoon are the only characters, the costumes are very straightforward, but with our customary attention to detail, Sassoon will, of course, be supplied with the Great War Service Dress of a Captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers (with distinctive regimental black ribbon) and Owen with that of a Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment.
