Lad's Army

A major 10 part reality documentary for ITV 1 looking at National Service in Britain during the 1950s through the experiences of a group of 30 volunteers.

Historical Advice:

History Producer: Taff Gillingham

Taff was the History Producer for the series and was responsible for ensuring that all the period details were correct, from the type of Army trucks used to the signage for the 'Depot' and all other period details. He was also responsible, along with fellow Khaki Chum, Allen Prior, for training the modern Army NCOs who were to be the Instructors for the 'Recruits' and was on hand throughout to give them advice as and when it was needed.

Uniforms and Equipment:

Once again, in order to create the whole experience it was necessary to equip each of the volunteers with every item of clothing and equipment that a soldier of 1955 would have had. As a great deal does not exist, much had to made from scratch. Uniforms, Equipment and Stores were sourced in a very short space of time. Khaki Devil created a complete working Quartermaster's Store which was correct in every detail. This enabled the kit to be issued properly and any damages to be replaced in the proper manner throughout the series.

Specialist Extras:

We also provided a small group of men, all dressed as soldiers of 1955. Every man was correctly turned out. All had the right haircuts and were well drilled in the ways of the soldier of the period. These men assisted with instruction, kit issue or just generally background characters to make the 'Depot' appear to be populated by more than 30 recruits.
