The Accrington Pals

Peter Whelan wrote his play in the 1980s as an exploration of the way that working-class women coped during The Great War, and the ways they were able to improve their lot in life. In the forward to the play he says that "the action takes place between autumn 1914 and July 1916. The background is reality. The 'Accrington Pals' battalion of Kitchener's New Army was raised and destroyed as described in the play".

The recent acquisition of artificial fruit and vegetables for May's stall and copies of the Accrington Observer from 1914 and 1916 have augmented our specialist items for this production, which already include the tin bath, shop scales and an enamel jug. We can provide a tram conductress' uniform for Bertha as well as the uniforms for the three Pals and CSM Rivers. In order to uphold our remit for authenticity, Khaki Devil ensure that the correct shoulder titles and cap badges for 11th (Service) Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment - 'The Accrington Pals' - are used.
